Doctors and ‘Educational Overpressure’ in Nineteenth-Century Britain: A Fatigue State that Divided Medical Opinion

Abstract The expansion of education in the later nineteenth century led to concerns that ‘educational overpressure’ was damaging health children. Overpressure an ill-defined condition which presented nosological problems and diagnostic difficulties. These were further clouded by political sociocultural issues included malnutrition, learning disabilities postulated hereditable physical mental degeneration. Uncertainty about true nature overpressure divided British medical profession with a vocal minority alleging it common could result serious illness, another group who thought consequences minor, some altogether doubted its existence. In Britain debate intensified politically motivated funding decisions put pressures on elementary schoolchildren. continental Europe emphasis secondary schoolchildren but other respects similar, though severe symptoms more commonly described Britain. Comparisons neurasthenia similar states show what is now recognized as fatigue state. Nosological difficulties are these conditions often conflicting opinions. Disputes temporarily damaged profession’s credibility at time when doctors pressing for involvement educational arena. However, schools no longer be regarded exclusively pedagogical had contributed wider child welfare.
